Braden Butler Chooses Ruby
By Diane Hawkins
Braden Butler, of Boy Scout Troop 755 from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, chose the 2013 Run for Ruby in Rancho Santa Margarita as his Eagle Scout project. Braden’s duties included attending all planning meetings, recruiting all 80+ volunteers and signing up blood donors for the event. He personally managed set-up and clean-up and notified neighbors affected by the race through street closures. He was also involved in approaching local businesses to ask for their involvement and enlisting community support for the run.

His Boy Scout troop was right behind him to make it all happen. As Braden’s mom Elise said, “It’s amazing to see these young men, willing to show up at 5 am on a Saturday, especially as cold as it was that morning.” When Braden, a sophomore at the Orange County School for the Arts, was asked why he chose helping with this particular event, he said, “I wanted to do something that was meaningful and that could really make a difference in someone’s life. I thought I could get the youth involved and make them aware of the importance of blood, bone marrow and organ donations”.

The Red Cross and Be the Match were on site to gather blood
donations as well as potential bone marrow donors through the
Be the Match registry
