A “WILDE” Opening
This past weekend, Olio Theatre Works launched a three-week run of its timely Victorian drama “Intimately Wilde” by Terra Taylor Knudson as a part of the People’s Theatrical Collaborative of the Long Beach Playhouse. With four nights of festive audiences, the cast and crew were spurred on to give rousing performances that would delight Oscar Wilde himself. In the ten days leading up to Opening Weekend, OTW company members and guest artists worked tirelessly to perfect lights, sound, sets and costumes special enough to celebrate England’s Victorian era. The following pictures illustrate some of the team hard at work.
Lighting Designer and OTW guest artist, Donny Jackson uses a blend of color and shadows to “paint” the many moods of Wilde’s exploration through his past. Jackson makes special use of a chandelier for Bosie’s hotel room and a square spot light to literally put Wilde in the “hot seat” while standing trial. OTW company member and “Wilde” stage manager, Stephanie Thomas does double duty, serving as costume designer and assisting set designer Tim Thorn with the wall treatments for “Constance” and “Bosie” lands. Her attention to detail adds the much needed polish that compliments Jackson’s saturating light plot.
As with most independent theatre companies, everyone in Olio Theatre Works wears multiple hats to complete every production. “Wilde” actors Alex DesCombs (“Robert Ross”) and Tim Thorn (“Oscar Wilde”) work together to execute Thorn’s set design.
“A Few Good Men” are all it takes to round out the cast of “Intimately Wilde”. Six men (and one woman) bring to life the many characters who made up Wilde’s colorful life.
