Celebrate Earth Day at the Ocean Institute, Free Admission for Beach Clean-up Volunteers

The Ocean Institute will join in the nationwide celebration of Earth Day on Sunday, April 21, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Explore marine wildlife; children can create an eco-friendly craft and enjoy other hands-on activities which teach about protecting natural environments.

The cost to participate is $6.50 for adults, $4.50 for children (ages 3-12); participate in the beach and harbor clean-up 9 – 11 a.m. that day and receive free admission that day.

Free Estate Planning Workshops

The Ocean Institute is pleased to offer a free series of financial workshops moderated by private fiduciary, Peter C. Kote, recipient of the national Distinguished Financial Planner Award from the Financial Planning Association. The goal is to educate attendees on ways to plan for their financial future and how to find competent professionals who have their best interests in mind. Celebrate World Oceans Day at the Ocean Institute

The Ocean Institute will celebrate World Oceans Day on Saturday, June 8, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. World Oceans Day allows us to celebrate the ocean’s wide array of wonders and resources and to consider ways that each of us can help with ocean conservation. Come and explore the wonders of the ocean with us:

• Investigate sand and shells of the world

• Explore marine wildlife with exciting hands-on activities

• Participate in a children’s mural painting

• Learn about animals in our deepest seas

The cost to participate is $6.50 for adults, $4.50 for children (ages 3-12).

Ocean Institute Presents Family Science Night Series

The Ocean Institute will present four Family Science Nights in 2013, July 9 & 23, August 6 & 20, 6 – 8 p.m. Presentations will include a talk by a distinguished local scientist, activities for kids and a lab to introduce the whole family to the fascinating world of science. Please join us as we survey the stars, explore the seas and dive into the surf zone. Cost is $7 per person or $25 per family. Information: (949) 496-2274.

 

Ocean Institute Sea Squirts Summer Camp for Ages 5-6

­ Registration is open for the Ocean Institute’s Sea Squirts summer camp, a week-long, half-day ocean education experience for children ages 5-6. There are nine camps during summer 2013, beginning on each of the following dates: June 24, July 8, 15, 22 & 29, August 5, 12, 19 & 26, 9 a.m. – noon each day.

Have you ever wanted to learn about the deep sea, or all about fish? What is it like to be a crab? This camp brings children’s literature to life as campers use scientific equipment to look at the anatomy of a fish, or hear the sounds of the ocean. Each day a song will introduce a new theme for the day’s activities. Highlights include daily crafts, crab races at baby beach and a treasure hunt. So come be a Sea Squirt and join us for a week full of fun and excitement!

For ages 5 & 6, proof of age required the first day (must be age 5 by Sept. 1, 2013). $165 per child (Ocean Institute members $150). August 26th is a four-day camp; cost is $150 (or $125 for members). Register online at www.ocean-institute.org or call (949) 496-2274.

Ocean Institute Neptune’s Mysteries Summer Camp for Ages 6-7

Registration is open for the Ocean Institute’s Neptune’s Mysteries summer camp, a week-long, full-day ocean education experience for children ages 6-7. There are nine camps during summer 2013, beginning on each of the following dates: June 24, July 8, 15, 22 & 29, August 5, 12, 19 & 26, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day.

Become an undersea detective as you investigate the mysteries of the deep! Each day is filled with a different mystery to solve such as the Mystery of the Abyss, the Vanished Sea Otter or the Mystery of the Sunken Ship. Campers will use scientific tools and techniques to solve a week’s worth of underwater mysteries. Highlights include exploring the Dana Point Marine Protected Area and a cruise on board the R/V Sea Explorer. So come join us for a fun-filled week of new puzzles to unravel, themed crafts and exploration of our onsite marine animals!

For ages 6 & 7, proof of age required the first day (must be age 6 by Sept. 1, 2013). $275 per child (Ocean Institute members $245). August 26th is a four-day camp; cost is $225 (or $200 for members). Register online at www.ocean-institute.org or call (949) 496-2274.

Ocean Institute Buccaneer Adventure Summer Camp for Ages 7-8

Registration is open for the Ocean Institute’s Buccaneer Adventure summer camp, a week-long ocean education experience for children ages 7-8. There are seven camps during summer 2013, beginning on each of the following dates: June 24, July 8, 15, 22 & 29, August 5, 12, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day.

Set a course for adventure as we go back in time to the Golden Age of Sail, to a world of wooden ships, buried treasure and yes…pirates! Learn what life was like at sea and experience the lost arts of the mariners. Each day is filled with activities that challenge young sailors including fun crafts, sail handling, rowing, storytelling, treasure hunts, encountering historic characters (yes, perhaps a pirate or two) and even voyaging to sea aboard the R/V Sea Explorer! Adventures are dockside aboard the tall ship Pilgrim and in the Maritime Learning Center.

For ages 7 & 8, proof of age required the first day (must be age 7 by Sept. 1, 2013). $275 per child (Ocean Institute members $245o).

Ocean Institute Open to the Public on Weekends – The Ocean Institute is open to the general public on Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Weekend visitors can enjoy special seasonal exhibits, as well as hundreds of living ocean animals, and shark and jellyfish feedings. Cost: $6.50 adults, $4.50 children ages 3-12. Or, with the purchase of a membership, a family can enjoy year-round free admission, benefit from member-only events and receive discounts on all other programs.

Visitors can also board one of the Ocean Institute’s sea-going vessels, the state-of-the-art R/V Sea Explorer or the historic tall ship Spirit of Dana Point. Cruises are an additional charge. For information, visit www.ocean-institute.org.
