CST (STAR) TESTING April 30th , May 2nd and 3rd
These days will be minimum days. Students will be released at 12:45 on Tuesday, April 30th, Thursday, May 2nd and Friday, May 3rd all students are taking tests on all three testing days.
Dear Newhart Middle School Parents:
Your child will be participating in the California’s Standardized Testing and Reporting “STAR” program on April 30th, May 2nd and 3rd. Newhart Middle School is one of the many schools participating in this statewide program. The STAR program is designed to provide students, parents, teachers, and the community with information about student achievement.
The tests your child will be taking are called either the California Standards Test (CST) or the California Modified Assessment (CMA). All students in the second through eleventh grade attending public school in California will be taking these tests.
To maximize his or her opportunity to perform well on the test, it is important that students do their best to increase the accuracy of the results. You are a vital part of the testing process and can help by:
- making sure your child has plenty of rest the night before testing;
- providing a healthy breakfast;
- helping your child see the test as an opportunity to show what he or she has learned and encouraging your child to do his or her best;
- scheduling appointments outside of the testing window;
- making sure your child is here and on time.
Parents will receive detailed reports of their child’s results, which will be sent to your home over the summer with an explanation of the results. Group results by grade level for each school, district, county, and the state will be posted as a link on the Capistrano Unified School District’s Web page (www.capousd.org).

Make-A-Wish-
Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation’s mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish® experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities.
Newhart Panthers, it’s time to make a difference and grant a child a wish! April 22nd through May 3rd, Newhart will be working towards granting a wish for a child. Our goal is to collect $5000 and make a wish come true! Money will be collected in Panther Plus. The class in each grade level with the most money collected will get a “No Run” pass for PE! Please bring in all of your spare change because every penny makes a difference. Be a part of an amazing opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life and create priceless memories for a family.
7th Grade Medieval Day-
Inviting all parents who would like to volunteer at your child’s 7th grade Medieval Day Event on Thursday, May 16. This event is a fun way for the 7th Graders to have a hands on experience of all the countries they studied this last year. PTA is in Need of-
The Ancient Day committee is looking for costumes from the following civilizations: India, China, Israel, Rome, Greece, Mesopotamia and Egypt. 6th Grade Ancient Day-
Would you like to become involved with 6th grade Ancient Day? This one-day event, sponsored by Newhart’s PTA, will take place on May 17th for all sixth-graders during their Social Studies period. Students will ‘live through’ much of what they learn this year by sampling food items, playing games, and dressing up in cultural clothing. Ancient Day is a fun way to introduce, reinforce and test their knowledge on the civilizations they learn about.

Mission Viejo Library E-Books-
Need information for a science or history report? Want access to electronic books for check-out? Check out the online resources available to students through the Mission Viejo Library! All you need is a library card to access the information. Go to the Mission Viejo Library website at http://www.cmvl.org . At the home page select the RESEARCH IT dropdown menu. Then click ELECTRONIC RESOURCES (ARTICLES AND MORE). On the ELECTRONIC RESOURCES page, there is a list of subjects for the library online resources. These can be sorted alphabetically for easy use. Once you select the database you want, click past the City of Mission Viejo disclaimer, and you will be asked to enter your Mission Viejo Library card number. If you don’t have a card, you can sign up online!
Not Attending Newhart or CAPO Next School Year?-
If you’re current 6th or 7th grade student will not be attending Newhart next year, or if your current 8th grader will not be attending CAPO High School please let the office know what school they will be attending for record purposes. Tdap vaccine requirement for students entering 7th grade
Whooping cough (pertussis) has been widespread in California. Many students have had to miss school because they were sick. To help protect your children and others from whooping cough, a new California law now requires students to be vaccinated against whooping cough.
For the 2013-2014 school year, all students entering 7th through 12th grades will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster shot (commonly called the “Tdap” vaccine) before starting school.
Home Arts is in need-
Our cooking classroom is in need of gently used towels. All sizes and types are needed (hand towels, dish towels, bath towels, etc.). All donations are tax deductible. Thank you!
Parent Portal-
We are encouraging all parents who have not yet done so to register for a Parent Portal account as soon as possible in order to take advantage of the options available through this system. In the 2013-2014 school year, the Capistrano Unified School District will institute a paperless report card system. Book: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
Synopsis: Jacob thought his grandfather’s stories and pictures were fake until his grandfather died under suspicious circumstances. Then, Jacob traveled across the sea and across time to find out the truth about the magical children.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION-
Bring in your Box Tops for Education that are found on most General Mills products and receive a Front of Lunch Line Pass for every 10 you turn into your math teacher! Proceeds go to the math department for supplies and equipment. Thank you!
