Mormon Helping Hands volunteers got up early Saturday morning, April 27, 2013, to serve as the manpower for two big projects helping the local community in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. The “manpower” included men, women, and children. The two projects included a landscaping project at the Canada Vista Park and the other was a food drive for the Second Harvest Food Bank organized at the local chapel for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
At the park a total of 191 volunteers provided 287 hours, which included applying mulch material to a large dog park, planting decorative and landscaping plants along a bare area by the parking lot, and sanding and repainting several park benches.
Cary Haine, Construction Project Coordinator for SAMLARC stated enthusiastically, “The manpower here is phenomenal!” He continued: “It’s a really great thing to get these families out here help. It gives everyone something to contribute, the kids, youth, and adults.” Haine also wanted to thank Mission Landscape that donated the mulch and plants. With such a large and well-organized work force, Haine confessed, “The challenge is to find more things to do.”
And Mormon Helping Hands Organizer, Bethany Warnick, did find more to do by planning a food drive with the Second Harvest Food Bank. On the same Saturday morning, adult and youth volunteers collected food and hygiene items from their neighbors and brought them to the chapel to sort and organize. At the end of the morning, the volunteers collected a total of twenty-three 55-gallon tubs of donations, which exceeded the original goal of 18 tubs.
Whether working at Canada Vista Park or collecting and sorting the Food Bank donations, on Saturday the Mormon Helping Hands effort gave families an opportunity to have a good time working together while giving service to their local community.
