2013 Entertainment Lineup

CHRISTOPHER YATES

Christopher Yates returns to Scotsfest with his unique brand of Down Under Celtic comedy and eccentric celtic characters.
These feature “The Rusty Bawls Show or Curls on Tour”: A brilliant mix of Celtic Humour and comic variety delivered with that dubious Ginger wit we’ve all come to know. This show is just as one would see at the world famous Edinburgh Fringe Theater Festival.
And keep an eye out for, (though he is hard to miss), “McCloud”. For you are all “lowlanders”, compared to this wirey product of the “HIGHlands”. A brilliantly comic “moving” show delivered from not less than ten feet?! If you do miss him, he likely walked right over you??!!

Christopher Yates is originally from the fine Celtic Commonwealth country of New Zealand. Drama and Circus school trained, Christopher is a full time performer, entertainer, musician and comic actor with over twenty years experience. He has performed on four continents in three different languages in a variety of performance genres. Though surely more important, his Celtic Credentials can be checked at the door. A Grandparent is a Bute Stuart!! Christopher’s unique skills, acts and heritage only adds to the international flavour of the stand out, unique, Celtic festival that Scotsfest is.

WICKED TINKERS

Wicked Tinkers – a Celtic Tribal Sound Explosion!
Prepare yourself for a wild ride with Wicked Tinkers. Pioneers of the growing Tribal Celtic movement, Wicked Tinkers have been playing haunting, heart-pounding bagpipes and tribal drums as a professional band since 1995. With the addition of the mesmerizing drone of the Australian didgeridoo and Bronze Age Irish horn, their allure is hypnotic. The band merges the best of modern, rock-and-roll energy of the 21st century with the ancient, persistent grooves of their Gaelic ancestors.

BAD HAGGIS

BAD HAGGIS, a band that fuses cutting-edge Celtic with influences of rock, alternative, jazz, pop, groove, world beat, African and Latin influences to produce a hearing-is-believing sonic experience.   From the dual leads of the “bagtar” (bagpipe & guitar) by Eric and guitarist Mike Hoffmann, to the deeply grooving rhythms laid down by bassist/vocalist Mick Linden, Brazilian drummer/vocalist Rogerio Jardim and Colombian percussionist Alberto Lopez, BAD HAGGIS employs a new musical vocabulary to create an exciting fusion of sound.

Fusing signature vocals and guitar with the deep pulse of the didgeridoo, the soaring highs of the bagpipes, and tribal percussion, BROTHER is wholly original. The band’s powerhouse live performances are an energetic celebration, captivating and engaging the audience from the first song to the last. Angus, founding member of BROTHER, arrived in Los Angeles from Australia with his brothers a decade ago as little more than fresh-faced farm boys. In LA, they found themselves busking at Venice Beach, the Hollywood Bowl and Universal Studios to survive. Since those days, BROTHER evolved its trademark sound while touring extensively in the United States and in Canada, Japan, France, Egypt and Australia.

HIGHLAND WAY

Playing everything from High Energy Festivals to Performing Arts Theaters, from Scotland to Nova Scotia, Ireland to California, Highland Way are uncompromising professionals. With their huge repertoire they know how to tailor their performance to the audience. A native Scot, Brian Caldwell is well known for his wonderful ability to charm any crowd while his energetic and driving rhythm guitar blends flawlessly with the rest of the band. Joining Brian are, Paul Graham Castellanos (on fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo), Sharon Whyte, on accordion and keyboards, Bob Sale on percussion and drums, and master of guitars and bass Jim Soldi. Highlighting Celtic music from Scotland and Ireland, with originals and the occasional popular cover, Highland Way create the ultimate show.

STAND EASY

Stand Easy is a Celtic Rock band led by John McLean Allan, an award-winning bagpiper formerly with the Grade 1 LA Scots Pipe Band. Stand Easy came together to share in John’s vision of creating a landmark fusion of commercial songwriting, Celtic music, and Rock & Roll.  A powerful crowd-pleasing band, Stand Easy performs original songs, traditional songs and instrumentals.

THE PLOUGHBOYS

The Ploughboys have been playing, singing, telling tales, engaging in feats of strength, animal husbandry, and defying the laws of gravity and propriety, for over a decade now. Whether performing in the Celtic tradition, favorites from the British Isles, or their own, wickedly clever compositions, the Ploughboys are sure to provide a rollicking, hand-clapping, foot-stomping good time!

NEIL O’NEIL

Neil O’Neill, Celtic Troubadour, was born in Johnstone. Scotland, a mile from the Wallace Monument, and has entertained audiences for more
than thirty years. A pure Scottish tenor, his musical influences span the Celtic / Roots music canon. Neil made a rousing fourth appearance for USS at last year’s Scotsfest.
Thrilled to be back again this year, he is honored to present the national anthems.

SCOTTISH FIDDLERS OF L.A.

For the past thirty years, the Scottish Fiddlers of Los Angeles have delighted audiences throughout Southern California with the lively, energetic and irresistibly uplifting music of Scotland, the Shetlands, Cape Breton Island and Ireland. Their playing is characterized by hard-driving reels and strathspeys, hauntingly beautiful airs, and sweet waltzes. Directed by internationally known Scottish fiddler Jan Tappan, their music is sure to get your toes tapping and your hands clapping. The Scottish Fiddlers perform at a variety of venues, and are always accepting new members.
