PARENT SURVEY: Each year, there are 10 – 12 parents who ask about the possibility of having school uniforms at Bergeson.  This year, we will be surveying parents to get an idea of what all parents think about school uniforms for our students at Bergeson.  One survey will be sent home with each student next week to solicit your opinion.  We would GREATLY appreciate it since the only way we can validate the survey is if 75% of the surveys are returned with a yes or no.  Our School Site Council voted to survey the parents about whether or not they would like to have school uniforms starting with the Kindergarten class of 2013-14. Again, this would just be for the incoming Kindergarteners and then each year after that.  K/1 for 14-15 school year.  K/1/2 for 15-16 school year.  K/1/2/3 for 16-17 school year and so on.  There are pros and cons about school uniforms which you can find with a Google Search.  We would like to hear from you in the form of this survey this week.  Thank you, in advance, for your participation.

CLASSROOM INTERUPTIONS: We will not interrupt class for lunch, musical instrument drop off, notes or messages from now on unless it is a dire emergency.  If a child doesn’t have a lunch or their instrument on music day, they are welcome to come to the office to check if someone dropped off lunch for them.  We will not interrupt the instructional activities in the class to have the teacher stop teaching so that they can answer the phone when the office staff is trying to relay a message from parents.  It has increased in recent weeks and we need to change this.  In addition, most of our teachers check their email once or twice per day so you could send an email note to the teacher if your child needs special arrangements for the end of the day.  Thank you for honoring the instruction going on in the classroom.

NEW PLAYGROUND MURAL: You may notice a new playground mural on one of the handball courts.  Our 3 Mandarin classes are creating a mural to celebrate the first year of the Mandarin Immersion program at Bergeson this year.  The children’s handprints will be on the mural.  That particular handball court had peeling paint and holes in it so we are thrilled that it looks so beautiful!  Thank you to Laura Bratt for heading up this project.

COMMUNITIES FOR CAUSE: The Bergeson PTA is excited to announce our new partnership with Communities for Cause, a fantastic FREE smartphone app that makes it easy to support Bergeson Elementary, at local merchants. Bergeson School already has 9 supports and has earned $10.  It’s easy to do – no coupons or discount cards to remember! Simply download the Communities for Cause App on your iPhone or Android, and select Bergeson Elementary as your cause to support, and show the app when you dine or shop at a participating merchant. The merchant will make a donation to the Bergeson PTA based on a percentage of your total bill. Just scan the QR Code below from your smartphone to go straight to the App, or you can find the App in the iTunes or Android App Store under Communities for Cause.  www.communitiesforcause.net/cause/Bergeson. Download the APP, check out the restaurants and merchants, and Bergeson kids are the recipients!

STRANGER DANGER: Today, there was an elderly lady across the street with a dog.  The lady motioned our children to come over to see her dog and many of the students did.  One of our teachers on duty in the parking lot saw this taking place and motioned for the children to keep on walking.  This is a good time to remind our children about Stranger Danger and to make sure that they don’t stop to talk with anyone that they don’t know.  Of course, this may have been an innocent situation but you never know and our children always need to be alert….especially our children who walk home.  Thank you for your assistance.

5TH GRADE MATH TEST: During the week of May 20-24, 2013 the Math 7 Accelerated Placement Test will be given to all Capistrano USD Grade 5 students. This new math course test is a pass/no pass assessment based on the California Grade 6 Common Core Math Standards. This test will include both a multiple choice and open-ended response section, measuring students’ math reasoning skills at the Grade 6 level, as defined by the California-adopted Common Core Math Standards.  Placement tests will be assessed this summer to determine the appropriate math course placement for all incoming Grade 6 students. Students will be informed of their Grade 6 math course placement (Math 6 or Math 7 Accelerated) in August at middle school registration.  Additional information regarding the District’s math course sequencing can be found on our website at http://capousd.ca.schoolloop.com/math.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BERGESON CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR: Bergeson is fortunate to have a stellar support staff!  Congratulations to the classified employee, Pam Hawthorne, our lunch lady, who was nominated to be Employee of the Year.  She will all be recognized at a ceremony on Monday at San Juan Hills High School.

ARTWORK FOR EDUCATION: If your child created artwork for this program and if parents signed a permission slip, you can now go to www.artwise.com and click on “find my child’s artwork” and type in “Bergeson”.  From there, parents can find their child’s teacher’s name and their child’s artwork (if they had signed a permission slip online) and they can place an order online.   Orders must be placed NOW.   Our school receives a portion of the proceeds and the greeting cards are BEAUTIFUL!

FOOD DONATIONS: We STILL have some boxes of donated dry and canned food from FOCUS ORANGE COUNTY and would like to donate this to Bergeson families who are in financial need.  Please come to the office and let us know so that we can give you a box and help your family.  A big thank you to the Focus Orange County for the donations!  Don’t be shy; come and get some; your donation is kept confidential!

FOOTPRINT FRIDAY RECYCLING COMPETITION: We have been challenged!  Remember when we challenged Mrs. Scholl’s husband’s school at Palisades a few months to see which school brought in the most recycling?  Palisades School is in Capistrano Beach and they LOST the competition so Mr. Scholl had to wear the Bergeson spiritwear shirt to his Friday flag ceremony.  They have challenged us to another recycling competition!  For the next 4 weeks of Footprint Friday’s in May, we will be collecting your plastic bottles and aluminum cans with hopes that our school wins the competition.  If we win, Palisades will add 15 new playground balls to the recess Ball Box.  If we lose, we need to buy them 15 playground balls.  In addition, Mr. Scholl will wear the Bergeson jersey to his flag ceremony.  If we lose, Mrs. Scholl will have to wear the Palisades shirt to our flag ceremony.  Oh no!!!  Bring your recycling tomorrow to school for Footprint Friday and help our school to win the competition!  We are also trying to fill the last bin before the end of the school year.  Every time we fill the recycle bin we receive $1000 for our school!

NEW STUDENTS REGISTER ONLINE: You can register your Kindergarten – 5TH grader online by going to the district website at www.capousd.org and find the online registration.  It’s takes about 15 minutes. Bring in your documentation to Attendance/Registration Clerk, Angel Newell to complete the registration process.  Do you have neighbors that are coming to Kindergarten next year?  Tell them to come and register!  We are creating our classes now!

PARENT PORTAL? Go to the Bergeson website http://bgnes.capousd.ca.schoolloop.com/ and on the right hand side click on Parent Portal and select Access to parent/student portal.  If you don’t have your student’s permanent id and verification code, call the office.  It is VERY important that each child has a Portal.  If you want to add or change contacts you can do it on the parent portal plus the Portal provides parents and guardians the ability to annually re-register their student on-line and download important documents versus completing traditional paper packets.  Parents also have access to their student(s) demographics, current schedule, daily attendance, course requests, and test scores.  Report card grades and unofficial transcripts can also be printed.  Emergency contact information can be updated anytime.  Parents of High School students can also view the student’s graduation status and college entrance requirements.  THOSE WITH PARENT PORTAL WILL GET STAR SCORES EARLY!

IN LINE ~ ON TIME: Congratulations to the following classes who were In Line ~ On Time for 17 days and spelled out the words PERFECT ATTENDANCE!  They received a popsicle party this week.

Mrs. Gray’s Class

Mrs. Loh’s Class

CELEBRATION BOOKS: Do you have a special event that you’d like to celebrate?  Please consider donating a book to our library in honor of your child or an event.  There is a form in the office, donate $20 and your child’s name will be in the book forever.  You can even pick out the book from a pre-purchased supply in the library.  There will be a plaque with your child’s name on the inside cover of the book forever!

SHINING STARS: Students who give of their time and talents to help those less fortunate in our community are recognized as Shining Stars.  They receive a cool blue Shining Star bracelet and their Star on the wall in the MPR for the whole year! This week: Morgan H. set up a lemonade stand, along with one of his friends and they raised $72 for the Pacific Marine Mammal Center.
