Notes about the People and Places in the Capistrano Unified School District

District students competed in the one-mile Kids Run the OC Race.

Students at 10 District elementary schools participated in the Kids Run the OC (KROC) program this year. Sponsored by the OCMarathon, KROC allows students to train at their schools for 10-12 weeks leading up to a one-mile race at the OC Fairgrounds in conjunction with the full-length marathon. The students accumulate the equivalent of 25.2 miles during training, and then, once they complete the race, have completed the marathon distance. Training includes a focus on nutrition and healthy habits. The training is led by volunteers, including parents, teachers, and, in the case of Malcom Elementary School, the principal. Elementary schools that participated in the May 4 race include: Ambuehl, Canyon Vista, Hankey, Chaparral, Del Obispo, Don Juan Avila, Malcom, Bergeson, Oak Grove, and Vista del Mar. … Three District seniors were recently named 2013 Orange County AVID Scholarship Winners. Ian Christner and Athena Sobhan fromSan Clemente High School and Gladys Garcia from San Juan Hills High School each received scholarships … Andrew Carroll, a junior at Capistrano Valley High School, has been accepted for West Point’s Summer Leaders Experience and the United States Air Force Academy’s Summer Seminar in June. Carroll is a member of the National Honor Society, Model United Nations, the cross-country and track teams, and Infantry Explorer Post 558. He is also an Eagle Scout. More than 6,000 juniors nationwide applied to the seminars, which offer outstanding high school juniors a week to experience life as a cadet and to inform their college selection decision.
