Up and Going At 5:45 am To Study Scriptures
To most in the Christian world, the word seminary means a school to train men or women to preach the word of God. In the world of a Mormon high school student it means an early morning Bible class, usually held at 5:45am, right before school.
Jeff Frazier, Freshman seminary teacher for Trabuco Hills High School students, explains, “Seminary is a daily dose of divine truth that helps encourage students to follow the teachings of Christ.”

Seniors get excited about finding correct scripture within the 10-second time limit
In the 2012-2013 school year students focused on the teachings of Christ in the New Testament. Here in south orange county, over 250 students attend seminary Monday through Friday from Trabuco Hills, Tesoro, El Toro or Mission Viejo high school. On Friday, May 17th, students and parents gathered to attend the Annual Scripture Chase event held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. Students were asked to memorize 25 New Testament scriptures and then a bible chase event created a fun environment for them to test their knowledge.
Seminary teacher, Tony Smith, was the Master of Ceremonies at this year’s event. Mr. Smith called out keywords for a scripture and students had 10 seconds to find the said scripture in their Bible. Each round included 5 scriptures in each of the 5 rounds so the event included all of the 25 scriptures the students had been studying.
In the Mormon culture seminary has long been seen as a blessing and a sacrifice. Penelope Lake, a first year seminary student, explains, “I enjoy getting to know the scriptures while making lasting friendships. Yes, it’s early but I am always happy once I arrive at class.”
