Art Talks: Lecture Series
Topic Plein Air Painting

Artist Robin Hall leads a discussion on of plein air painting. Discover the challenges and obstacles plein air artists face when searching for the perfect painting and different approaches to capturing a scene. Discussion with Festival artists including Jeff Horn, Ken Auster and Michael Obermeyer.

Art Talks are a fascinating and informative series that you can enjoy Thursdays from 12 – 1pm between July 11 – August 29, 2013. Free with Festival of Arts admission.

Adult Art Classes
Ceramic Clay Masks with Scott Young

Date: Thursday, July 18
Time: 1:30 – 4:30pm

Create your own African inspired clay mask! Using clay tools, you’ll learn decorating techniques and how to manipulate slabs to form facial features. Instructor Scott Young will take you step by step through the process of creating your very own unique piece of artwork. This one-day class is perfect for vacationers and locals alike looking to try something new, have fun, and soak in the creative atmosphere. $50 materials fee per person, per class. Art, Jazz, Wine & Chocolate
Live Performance by Eloise Laws

Cost: $15 in addition to Festival admission

Jazz music and wine tasting are the perfect pair – then add chocolate and you’ll want to come back every Thursday! Head down to the Festival of Arts for “Art, Jazz, Wine and Chocolate” featuring Kendall-Jackson wines and XAN Confections chocolates.

About Eloise Laws: Eloise is a vocalist and stage actress from Houston, Texas. In the 1970s, she began recording for Holland-Dozier-Holland’s Music Merchant and later Invictus labels. Her first album, Ain’t It Good Feeling Good was released on Invictus in 1977. She would not record another solo album until the late 1990s. Meanwhile, she pursued a career on stage, starring in the Tony-nominated musical, It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues, which she also co-wrote.

Thursday nights between July 11 – August 29, 2013 from 5:30 – 7:30pm on the Festival Grounds. Concerts are free; Wine and Chocolate pairings are $15 in addition to Festival of Arts admission. For wine tasting, must be 21 and over.

Jazz on the Green
Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band

Date: Saturday, July 20
Time: 1 – 3pm
Cost: Free with Festival admission

About Poncho Sanchez: For more than three decades as both a leader and a sideman, conguero Poncho Sanchez has stirred up a fiery stew of straightahead jazz, gritty soul music, and infectious melodies and rhythms from a variety of Latin American and South American sources. His influences are numerous, but among the more prominent figures that influenced his music are two of the primary architects of Latin jazz – conga drummer/composer Chano Pozo and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie.

Art of Cooking
Chef Amar Santana of Broadway, Laguna Beach

Learn to create delicious dishes with Chef Amar Santana of Broadway, Laguna Beach at the Festival of Arts. As part of the 2013 Art of Cooking series, he will demonstrate step-by-step some of his favorite recipes and share samples of his finished creations with the audience.

Chef Amar Santana is one of Orange County’s hottest rising stars after just last year opening his widely successful flagship restaurant, Broadway By Amar Santana in Laguna Beach.  His globally influenced menu includes unexpected flavor profiles and artful presentations, reflecting his zeal for food and for life.  Almost immediately, critical acclaim, accolades and countless rave reviews rolled in.  Santana attributes his success as a direct result of ambition, drive, passion, and modestly, extraordinary talent.  Prior to opening his first restaurant, Santana served as Sous Chef at Aureole in New York and Executive Chef for Charlie Palmer at Bloomingdale’s South Coast Plaza.


Youth Arts Education Workshops

Cost: $10 material fee/session

Ignite the creative spark in your young artist this summer by allowing him or her to take classes in mixed-media, printmaking, collage, and more taught by experienced artists in the Festival Art Center. Kids love this opportunity to explore their artistic horizons and there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a finished piece of original, personal art. Both kids and parents will enjoy a fun and friendly environment that will inspire a desire to come back to create art again and again. Classes offered Monday – Friday.
