Six Schools Selected for Garden Program

Local Organization Provides Advice, Curriculum, Programming

The garden at Tijeras Creek.

Six of the District’s elementary schools have been selected to participate in the Grow Your Own! school garden program sponsored by The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano. Viejo, Canyon Vista, Las Palmas, Marblehead, Tijeras Creek, and Del Obispo elementary schools were all selected for the program’s second season. The program was conceived by The Ecology Center in 2012 as a way to provide support to local school gardens in the form of mentorship, resources, expert advice, curriculum, and programming. The ultimate intention is to help schools build self-sustaining, thriving programs that last long into the future. Last year, Malcolm, Kinoshita, and San Juan elementary schools participated in the pilot. This year, in collaboration with the Rob Machado Foundation, ten schools will participate; six in Orange County and four in San Diego County.

As supporters of local schools sign up families, friends and neighbors to receive the Register for one year at $1 a day, each supporter will be able to select the school of their choice and donate an Acer Chromebook. The program is designed to bring thousands of much-needed laptops into classrooms for use as learning tools in science, math, history and many other subjects-at no cost to the schools. City of Mission Viejo Offers 10-Week Parenting Program

Sessions Designed to Provide Intervention Strategies

Parents are invited to take part in the Parent Project program that is designed to help children grow into safe and capable adults. The program takes place October 1 through December 10. The City of Mission Viejo for the last several years has offered the 10-week program that was created for parents with difficult or out-of-control adolescent children. Developed over a 20-year-period, the curriculum helps parents learn and practice specific prevention and intervention strategies for defiant actions or destructive behaviors such as truancy, alcohol and drug use, gangs, running away, violence and other issues. Parents will learn proven tools and tactics to deal with poor grades, teen social trends, and they’ll learn to understand teens use of technology. Mission Viejo deputy sheriff’s, including several of the School Resource Officers, receive 40 hours of training to facilitate the program, which caters to parents with kids in different stages of life. Deputies teaching the program can address every issue parents may have with their children to help them build better relationships. The first six classes of the 10-week program take place on Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with the rest ending an hour earlier at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way. Cost is $20 per person or $30 per couple. Space is limited, so register today by calling 949-470-8433. For more information about this beneficial program, visit www.parentproject.com.
