Journey School Third Graders Help Educate Children in Pakistan and Afghanistan

ALISO VIEJO – Jan. 15 – Third graders at Journey School, a Waldorf-inspired public charter in Aliso Viejo, are doing their best to collect pennies to help build schools in poverty stricken areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan. A penny doesn’t buy much here, but over there a penny buys a pencil.

The program the children are raising money for is called Pennies for Peace. Pennies for Peace is part of the Central Asia Institute co-founded by Greg Mortenson. Mortenson is well known as the subject of the best selling Three Cups of Tea. CAI’s mission is to promote and support community-based education, especially for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. This ongoing humanitarian effort strives to build bridges to a peaceful future through understanding and education.

Jillian Murphy, the third graders’ teacher is pleased to see her students learning the value of a penny and connecting with children on the other side of the world. “The children are very excited about helping to change the world, one penny at a time,” says Murphy.

To donate pennies contact Murphy at (949) 448-7232.
