Friday’s Weekly Newsletter

January 16, 2009

Monday, January 19 is a holiday in remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a man who believed in all people and also believed in peace. His most famous speech can be found at http://www.usconstitution.net/dream.html with a small portion of it here: “I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”

NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY. Have a great weekend!

2008-2009 Bergeson Yearbook

Our Marian Bergeson Elementary School Yearbook is now on sale. Pre-sale cost is $25 until February 12 (after this date the cost will be $30) and the form went out this week.

Speak Up to the New President!
Special Mini-Speak Up Survey open through Inauguration Day, January 20th, 2009
“What is the one thing you would do to improve schools to ensure that all students receive the education and skills they need to be successful in life?”

You have the opportunity to participate in our democracy by sharing your ideas for improving our schools with President Elect-Obama and the new Congress. It’s quick and easy through the online, mini Speak Up survey available at http://www.netdayspeakup.org/inauguration08/. (The secret word to log in to this survey is “cusd”) This special survey, which is part of Project Tomorrow’s larger Speak Up project, will be open until January 20th, 2009. Results will be shared with the new Administration during a Congressional Briefing on March 24, 2009 in Washington, DC. This is a great opportunity for you to have a real voice in the new policies that will be debated in Washington, DC over the next few months!

Volunteer Badges

Parents need to pick-up their badges from the office and keep them in your purse/car; be sure to bring them back each time. You’ll still need to stop in the office and sign in before going to the classroom. The School District is very strict about this. NO BADGE – NO VOLUNTEERING! And truly, we love our Bergeson volunteers so make sure you bring the badge with you when you come to school. Thanks for the help that you give our teachers!

National Geographic Bee

Congratulations to the following students who are the winners of the Bergeson School National Geographic Bee and will advance to the next level of competition! All school winners are eligible to win the national championship and its first prize, a $25,000 college scholarship on May 19 and 20 in Washington, DC. Students in 4th through 8th grades from thousands of schools across the US will compete. The questions are difficult but our students studied hard and really learned a lot. Some of the questions can be found at these websites: www.Nationalgeographic.com and www.sheppardsoftware.com. Thank you to Mrs. Wendy Thomas for running this program and her helpers, Mrs. Lombardo, Mrs. Bowen and Mrs. Lynds for their assistance!

Congratulations to the Winners!

Zak Nocon (Mrs. Jones class).

Jared Agle (Mrs. Forney/Koopman) is our second place winner.

Cori Lange (Mrs.Thomas) is the third place winner.

Olivia Simon (Mrs. Duff) received an Honorable Mention.

Thank you Philharmonic Society of Orange County

We are thankful to the Philharmonic Society of Orange County for sponsoring an assembly for our 4th and 5th grade Bergeson students called Meet the Musicians. Our students were able to hear a professional music ensemble perform right here at school on Thursday morning. In addition, our 2nd grade students were sponsored by this same generous organization to attend a performance called Disneyland Salutes the American Band which was held this last Tuesday at Saddleback Church. Our 2nd graders enjoyed the performance and the bus ride! Thank you, Philharmonic Society!
