4th GRADE MUSIC DEMONSTRATION: The 4th Grade students have spent the first several weeks of school in a music exploratory program called, The Basics of Block Music where they are able to try out both the violin/strings class and the general music class.  They have two 40 minute lessons per week.  As they come to the end of this exploration, they are going to be asked to choose one class for the rest of the school year, either strings or general music.  Each 4th grade class will have a different demonstration time and parents are invited to attend.  Students will perform their music and the music teachers will explain the choices.  Here are the class times:

Jeni Duff’s class has their demo on Wednesday, Oct 23 at 8:35am – 9:15am
Wendy Thomas’ class has their demo on Friday, Oct 25 at 1:25pm – 2:05pm

FOOTPRINT FRIDAY: We are having our first Footprint Friday competition. It is going to be by grade level. It will run from TODAY through Nov. 15th.  The winning grade will get lunch the week of Nov.18th sponsored by Chick-fil-A and BESF. Since there will be more recycling for the contest, we’d also appreciate extra parent helpers out there on Friday mornings:) For week 1 this week, the competition totals are below.  Let’s see if your grade level can WIN!

  • K – 11.1 lbs.
  • 1st – 19 lbs.
  • 2nd – 19.8 lbs.
  • 3rd – 42 lbs.
  • 4th – 15.1 lbs.
  • 5th – 17 lbs.

GREAT CALIFORNIA SHAKE-OUT: On Thursday, 10/17, our school engaged in a big Earthquake drill on Thursday.  Our staff had jobs in the areas of first aide, student assembly area, search and rescue, student check out and security.
MOVIE NIGHT: Thank you to the Bergeson PTA for hosting our first movie night which was attended by approximately 150 people.  Special thanks to PTA President, Vanessa Leite, Courtney Fielder, Jennifer Pang and Ed Arpawong for helping with this event. It was a fun way to spend an evening with a full moon!
4TH AND 5TH GRADE PARENTS: BESF has partnered with 2 music stores in the area:  Tim’s Music and Soli Music.  A flyer went home this week.  If your child is renting or purchasing a musical instrument to be a part of the band or orchestra, please consider these two vendors because our school will receive a donation back to help pay for the music program.  Thank you!
END OF DAY PROCEDURES: When picking up your child at the end of the day, please do not wait in front of the classroom. Family members are welcome to wait for children at the lunch tables or out in the front of the school (for grades 1 – 5). Please do not wait in front of the classroom windows.  This is very distracting to classes so we appreciate your help. In addition, the Kindergarten playground will only be available for play until 2:15 pm.  The YMCA needs to use it and they have rules that they can’t combine the Y kids with the general population.  Thank you for your understanding.
EVITA ON DECEMBER 22: A few times per year we get a block of discounted tickets to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa.  Currently, we have a block of 75 seats in the back of the Orchestra section for the Broadway production of Evita on December 22 at 1 pm.  This education discount ticket is $36 per ticket (regularly $80).  Purchase tickets by sending a check to school for the number of tickets that you want with your child’s name and teacher in the memo line and check made out to “SCFTA”.  This is not a fundraiser – just an opportunity to experience the arts in our community.  A description of the show from the SCFTA website:
http://scfta.org/home/Events/EventDetail.aspx?EventID=1423 Once the 75 tickets are gone, we usually can’t get more at this price. The deadline is November 1.
FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH: As many of you are aware households must reapply every year to see if they qualify for free or reduced meals.  This year if they have not reapplied for meal benefits their children will drop off the program on October 18, 2013.  As of today we have finished processing all applications received and have sent letters home notifying families whose children were on the program last year, but the department has not received their application for this year.   The letter tells them they need to reapply or their children will fall off the program.  The letter lets parents know that they can download an application from our website or use our online application process. Free and Reduced Lunch applications are in the front office at Bergeson for families.  The qualifications are listed on the form with a family’s income at a certain limit.
BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION – Class Competition UpdateThe classes that turned in the most valid Box Tops for Education the 2nd week were Terheggen, Mainprize/Young, and Boys.  So far we have over 4,000 Box Tops.  That’s $400!  Turn more in to your child’s classroom or label with teacher’s name and place in the red cardboard schoolhouse in the front office.  Next week is our final week of the competition, concluding Friday October 25th.  Also, it is our last chance to submit Box Tops expiring 12/31/2013! Each one is worth 10 cents, but there are many opportunities for bonus tops. Check out www.BTFE.com for a list of products, coupons, online shopping, discounts and more.  We also collect the Labels for Education UPCs throughout the year.
