The Arts and Physics Come Together for a Mind and Body-Bending Performance

“Nucleus Duet” performed by Saddleback College dancers Brittany Lockhart and Gabriel Masri

Entangled States comes to the McKinney Theatre on Wednesday, February 5th at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, February 6th at 7:30 p.m. in the McKinney Theatre.

This imaginative production features faculty and students in dance, theatre, visual arts, and physics coming in performance to explore the intricacies of light and subatomic particles. Saddleback College dance professor and choreographer Deidre Cavazzi is excited to bring her dancers back again after performing in The Rite of Spring last April. The performance will be preceded by a brief introductory presentation on quantum physics by Saddleback science professor Todd Brei. Jennifer Porter’s intermediate photography class will display images that have been created for the performances.

Entangled States features 23 contemporary dancers, and Cavazzi’s choreography has been inspired by ongoing dialogue with Brei and lighting designer Tim Swiss. “I love collaborating with other faculty members across campus, and finding ways to integrate the arts into other academic disciplines”, says Cavazzi, “It has been very inspiring to develop choreography around these themes because the dancers get excited and want to learn more about physics. The students have been sharing web articles and bringing books in, and when we start a new section of choreography, I talk first about the physics behind it.  I think finding connections between academic fields makes education more stimulating.”

Regarding the dance/science collaboration, Saddleback science professor Todd Brei stated, “When comparing artists and scientists, I don’t care for labels such as “right-brained” and “left-brained”. I do not wish to pit creativity against reason. The arts and the sciences work in concert to inform us of the world in which we live. We should give credit to the artists, because they have a gift for magnifying all that is mysterious. The work of the artist is to speak to us through our senses. Likewise give credit to the scientists, because they have learned the language to expose the laws behind the mysteries. The work of the scientist is to speak to our intellect. Any appreciation of art is never far from an appreciation for the fundamental laws that describe the complexities of our world.”

Bart McHenry, Dean of Fine Arts and Media Technology, stated, “I am thrilled to see this collaboration between the departments at Saddleback College for infusion of many arts into one project. I hope it not only entertains but inspires our students to creatively dream up future collaborations.
