Lifeguard candidates still sought for training

 

The City is still seeking people interested in training to become a lifeguard. The City’s Lifeguard Training Courses educate candidates in the skills and knowledge necessary to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies.

The course is offered in three 3-day sessions this month and in May at the City’s Montanoso Recreation Center. Participants will receive American Red Cross certification in Lifeguard Training, First Aid, AED and CPR for the professional rescuer to help prepare for an emergency. The certification is good for two years.

To participate in the training, candidates must be at least 15 years old and will be required to take and pass a swimming and skills test. Community members can opt for any one of the following training sessions that take place from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday April 25-27 and May 16-18 at 25800 Montanoso Drive.

8 Days of Arts starts May 3

artThe City of Mission Viejo, Saddleback College, and The Shops at Mission Viejo are joining forces to host “8 Days of Arts” – a community collaboration that will embrace art in many forms throughout Mission Viejo May 3-10.  The 8 Days of Arts kicks off at the City’s Oso Viejo Park then travels to Saddleback College with a culmination celebration at The Shops at Mission Viejo.  This first-time event is designed to build arts awareness and cultivate a love of art in people of all ages. All events are free unless otherwise noted.

A dance and painting performance by Saddleback College students will take center stage during the City’s Arts Alive Festival May 3-4 on the Village Green at Oso Viejo Park and the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way. Festival details are available athttp://discovermissionviejo.com.

Saddleback College will host a plethora of events from May 5-10 in the Fine Arts and Media Technology complex. Students and faculty in the arts will display their talents in music, art, theatre, speech and photography.

Then on Monday, May 5, piano students will perform in solo repertory and ensembles by composers like Bach and Gershwin.  An art lecture, Margarita happy hour and jazz performance will follow.

The following day features Cinema-Television-Radio students presenting a film showcase in the McKinney Theatre.  The day also includes a student photography shoot demonstration with models; art history lecture; student art exhibition; and an awards reception.

On Wednesday, May 7, the college will feature a strawberry shortcake bowl event in the art courtyard.  A theatre arts showcase, lecture, champagne reception and recital follow later in the day.

The fun continues at Saddleback on May 8 with a speech showcase performance, music ensemble and theatre performance. The campus on Friday, May 9 will host a chamber music performance and other activities for the community.

The excitement culminates on May 10 when the City of Mission Viejo and Saddleback College bring the arts to The Shops at Mission Viejo. Patrons will enjoy performances by music students and singers throughout the mall beginning at noon.  The City of Mission Viejo will host a complimentary Artists Workshop for kids (lower level near H&M/Old Navy) until 4 p.m. with activities that include Zendangle, watercolor, printmaking, a street painting demonstration on pastel paper, chalk-board messaging and social networking.

Free car seat safety course April 23

 

CarSeatThe California Highway Patrol will school people on how to properly install a child car seat at a free event April 23 at Audi Mission Viejo.

According to reports, 80 percent of car seats are improperly installed. Members of the CHP will give folks a personal tutorial on car seat safety with information on how to choose the right size seat, fit your child, adjust the restraints, and properly install it into your vehicle. The CHP will also provide information on weight and age restrictions as well as the newest laws.

First Artisan Faire Saturday

 

Artisans will showcase their unique handcrafted gifts and items during the first Artisan Faire on Saturday, April 19.

Artisan Faire is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Mission Viejo Village Shopping Center at 25402 Marguerite Parkway.

The event will feature a host of art and craft vendors including Origami Owl jewelry; handmade candles; baby clothes and hats; clothing; paintings; handmade soaps; ink art; photography pieces; children’s books; wood toys for kids; ceramics; and sterling silver jewelry. The Saddleback Art League will have painters on hand, and kids will enjoy ink art and music.

Entertainer Martin Espino will enchant faire patrons with his “Sounds of Ancient Mexico,” performed with instruments from his ancestors in Ancient Mexico.  Espino has been performing, teaching, recording and touring for the last 35 years.

The event will take place the third Saturday of every month. It is sponsored by the City’s Cultural Arts Committee, Mission Viejo Friends of the Arts and Saddleback Lanes.

Puppets and Players Little Theatre to perform during Arts Alive Festival May 3

 

Kids of all ages are invited to discover the power of imagination in the popular fantasy tale “Puff the Magic Dragon,” a Marionette Puppet Show that will take place during the City’s Arts Alive Festival on Saturday, May 3.

Presented by Puppets and Players Little Theatre, the show takes place at 2 p.m. and again at 3:30 p.m. on the Village Green at Oso Viejo Park, 24932 Veterans Way.

The popular performance features classical marionettes, hand puppets and live performers combined with dazzling sets, lights and music – all presented in a exquisitely crafted European-style marionette theatre on wheels.

The two free shows are sponsored by Friends of the Mission Viejo Library and will delight children of all ages.

There will be lawn seating only, so people should bring blankets or beach chairs.
