“Insurgency and Social Interaction in Recent Excavations
of the Egyptian Fortress in New Kingdom Jaffa”
Travel back to ancient Egypt for a rare peek at her mystery-shrouded past on Saturday, May 10 at 1:30 PM at the Bowers Museum, 2002 N. Main Street, Santa Ana, CA.
This free event is hosted by the American Research Center of Egypt, Orange County Chapter (ARCE). It will be held in the Norma Kershaw Room of the museum. The presentation by Dr. Aaron A. Burke, renowned archaeologist and UCLA Associate Professor, Near Eastern Archaeology, will highlight recent discoveries made at the Jaffa Cultural Heritage Project in Israel. Dr. Burke has directed the Project since 2011.
The proud imperial stronghold of Jaffa, near today’s bustling city of Tel Aviv, Israel, starred in a 300 year-old tug-of-war. The Canaanites fought the Egyptians for centuries to control the critical port city. And the winner was Egypt, for a while. Jaffa – also called Yafo – eventually passed to Israel’s control where it remains today. Join us for a unique opportunity to explore the reasons for the ancient conflict, based on recent archaeological discoveries at Tel Yafo.
In addition to the Jafa Project, Dr. Burke has participated in excavations at the Israeli sites of Tel Kabri , Ashkelon, Yaqush, and Ketef Hinnom, and at Tell Atchana (Alalakh), Turkey and Tell El-Borg, Egypt. He is the author of “The History and Archaeology of Jaffa, Volume 1”, exploring the historical, economic and legal context for Jaffa’s development.
