The Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks Scholarship Committee was hard at work over the holidays.

Forty scholarship applications from Saddleback Valley high school seniors were being poured-over and meticulously judged. The highest scoring student applications, three boys and three girls, were moved up to the next level of judging in the Orange Coast District competition to take place on January ninth.

Advancing student applications were: Matthew D. Foundoulis – Laguna Hills High School, Ryan J. Nyberg – Aliso Niguel High School, Jorrel C. Tomas – El Toro High School, Ashley P Bonetto – Saddleback Christian High School, Paulina S. Ordaz – Dana Hills High School, and Haley E. Sherburne – J. Serra Catholic High School. The final state and national judging will take place later in the month.

Hundreds of Individual scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $60,000 will be awarded to the students with the highest scores in State and National competitions. Over four million dollars in scholarships each year is awarded nationally by the Elks. The highest scoring students in the Saddleback Valley competition will also be honored at the Mission Viejo Elks Lodge later in the year.

Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Scholarship Committee Chairman John Dellos said of the project, “These students are all so intelligent and so ambitious, that just reading their applications leaves one with the happy feeling that the future of our nation will be in good hands.” Dellos thanked the judging committee members for their diligence and hard work in the judging process.
