Three CUSD Twelfth Graders Receive Scholarships from Mission Viejo Kiwanis Club

Three Capistrano Unified School District students were among the six graduating twelfth graders who each received $1,000 scholarships from the Mission Viejo Kiwanis Club. Capistrano Valley High School seniors Kenny Cheng and Natalia Strozynski  and Tesoro High School senior Alexandria Choy were selected based upon their school and community service, citizenship and academic achievement.

Each student was presented with a certificate and a check for $1,000 by former principals and Kiwanis members Dan Burch, Bob Gaebel, Dr. Patricia Griggs and Keith Sims. Mission Viejo Mayor Cathy Schlicht was also in attendance along with the students’ parents and school principals.

The scholarships will be particularly helpful to the students as they begin their college careers this fall. Cheng, Strozynski and Choy will be attending school in the southern California area and pursuing their respective interests in science, dentistry, and communications and environmental studies.

Kenny Cheng – Recognized for his community service leadership and academic achievement, this Mission Viejo resident has a 4.4 grade point average and was elected a Kiwanis Key Club Division 41 Lieutenant Governor serving ten local high school clubs.  As an IB student and diploma candidate attending Capistrano Valley High School, he has completed 15 AP and IB courses.  Kenny will be attending the University of California, San Diego pursuing a major in Cognitive Science.

Natalia Strozynski – A senior at Capistrano Valley High School, Natalia takes advantage of the medical career opportunities offered by the South Coast Regional Occupational Program.  The Mission Viejo resident is focused on becoming a dentist with a goal of enhancing her patients with better smiles. She and a friend created a non-profit club to raise funds for CHOC Hospital.  She has also volunteered 200 hours at Saddleback Hospital. Natalia is fluent in three languages and participates in a folklore dance group. She will be attending UC Riverside this fall.

Alexandria Choy – As a Kiwanis Key Club member at Tesoro High School, Alexandria has been involved in numerous community activities.  In recognition of her service and achievements she has been awarded the Torch of Excellence for Geometry and another for Citizenship.  She is also an AP Scholar with Honors for her 4.38 Grade Point Average.  Alexandria is on the Tesoro Tennis Team and volunteers at Starlite Dance Studio and at the Saddleback Church Food Pantry.  Alexandria resides in Ladera Ranch and will be attending UCLA this fall exploring her interests in communication and environmental studies.
