The Woeful Maladies of Ennui Manor and Other Mixed Repertory
In celebration of six successful years of performing throughout Southern California, Backhausdance presents an evening of company repertory at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. The evening includes a world premiere piece by esteemed choreographer, Jodie Gates, artistic director of Laguna Dance Festival, and three works choreographed by Jennifer Backhaus:The Woeful Maladies of Ennui Manor, Arrive, and Shift.
Backhausdance brings to the stage the athleticism and grace that has propelled Orange County’s premier dance company since its inception in 2003. Jennifer Backhaus, recently commissioned by Los Angeles Ballet, and her company of dancers will perform The Woeful Maladies of Ennui Manor, a stunning visual and narrative work set on a blanket of grass. Arrive was commissioned in part by the McCallum Theatre Institute. The following quote by poet laureate Maya Angelou was the inspiration for creating the piece: “Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.” Finally, Shift, an elegant four-part work and winner of multiple Lester Horton awards, will close the evening with a sense of uplifting hope.
