CUSD Receives National Recognition for Internet Safety Programs

CAPISTRANO UNIFIED RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR
INTERNET SAFETY PROGRAMS

The Capistrano Unified School District was ranked amongst the top 100 safest districts in the nation for student use of the Internet, according to the Educational Safe Search Index, administered by Thinkronize Inc. CUSD attributes this distinction to its implementation of the netTrekker educational search tool, and dedication to train staff members, parents and students in Internet safety including academic integrity, age appropriateness, and overall safe use of technology.

In its second year of the implementation, CUSD ranks 39th, with only 5 California school districts recognized in the overall index. The netTrekker search tool has enabled the district to transform digital content into safe, valuable, custom designed resources for teachers and students. “Teachers are now using technology as a means to an end. It’s become a valuable resource to differentiate instruction, hold student attention, and bring meaningful learning into the classroom,” said Dr. Susan Holliday, Director of Educational Technology for the Capistrano Unified School District.

Students, in preparation for today’s society, need to be 21st century literate. They need to be able to find information, validate it, synthesize it, leverage it, communicate it, collaborate and problem solve with it; netTrekker provides the opportunity to practice these skills. Teachers have connected their students to opportunities that fundamentally shifted their academic experience through the use of netTrekker; not only are students better prepared for college but for life. “We are honored to have achieved this status,” notes Holliday. “With technology funding in California ranking 49th out of all 50 states, this is quite an accomplishment.”

Friday’s Weekly Newsletter

December 12, 2008

We would like to welcome our first-time BARK subscribers!

We have added the email addresses that you gave us at the beginning of school to import another 250 friends and families to our Bergeson List-serve, the BARK. This newsletter is just one way that we can communicate and keep everyone informed about what’s going on at school.

We have such a great school community with amazing children, parents, teachers and staff who all help to support and build-up our young people. You are an important part of this community and we appreciate that you have given your time, talent and resources to help our Bergeson community grow and prosper for the benefit of our children.

Report Cards

Report cards were sent home with students yesterday. Remember that we are always looking for continuous growth and there is no perfect student. As long as we grow throughout the year and learn more today than we knew yesterday to keep building knowledge, we’re going places!

Laguna Niguel Holiday Parade

The Laguna Niguel Holiday Parade will be held TOMORROW, Saturday, December 13 starting at 10 AM. This year will be a little different than in years past. Bill Locke has donated a flat-bed truck and our 5th grade band will be riding on the truck and performing Jingle Bells. ANY other Bergeson students are encouraged to join with us by walking along side the truck and ringing Jingle Bells to accompany the 5th graders. Mrs. Awna Knowles will organize the students who would like to make jingle bells after school on Friday. You are even welcome to join us on Saturday morning as long as you bring your permission slip with you. Bergeson is number #74 in the parade which is somewhere close to the middle of the parade. The band students will meet AT school to carpool over to the parade and all other students will meet near the corner of Crown Valley and St. Timothy’s church (west of Moulton). 5th grade band students meet at Bergeson at 8:30 AM; if you’d like to help us decorate the truck, meet at Bergeson at 8:00 AM. ALL of the other Bergeson students meet at the parade. Please join us and show our Bergeson Bulldog spirit!

Laguna Niguel/Aliso Viejo Area Choral Concert

Our 5th grade choir will perform in the Laguna Niguel/Aliso Viejo Area Choral Concert at Aliso Niguel High School on Monday, December 15 at 7 PM in the gym. All 5th grade choir students are asked to be there by 6:30 PM for this performance. All guests are welcome to come and enjoy this performance of over 500 singers from the elementary, middle and high schools in the Laguna Niguel/Aliso Viejo area!

Imagination Machine

Thank you to our Bergeson PTA for sponsoring the Imagination Machine assembly at school which was held last Monday. Students wrote stories which were dramatized by actors on the stage for this program. This helps students to see their stories come to life.

Congratulations to these students who had their stories selected by the Imagination Machine.

Geography Bee

Mrs. Wendy Thomas will be leading our 4th and 5th grade students in the Geography Bee over the next two weeks with the help of parents, Mrs. Lombardo and Mrs. Bowen. The Geo Bee is a contest in which students from each class are asked Geography questions and a winner from each class is determined by the most questions correct. (The questions are difficult!) After the holidays, we’ll have the final competition where the class winners compete and we name the Bergeson Geography Bee winner. Study hard!

Adopt-A-Family

Every day we read about people all over the world that are in need and less fortunate than we are. Nobody is immune from the current economic crisis. Please realize that there are families right here in our Bergeson community that are also struggling. As you know, in years past, Bergeson has adopted families from Camp Pendleton during the holiday season. This year, we are taking another approach and adopting families right here at Bergeson Elementary School.

If you would like to support one of our less fortunate families this holiday season, we are requesting GIFT CARD DONATIONS (Ralphs, Vons, Target, Wal-Mart, etc). Please write the amount of donation on each gift card.

If you feel your family could benefit from the Adopt-A-Family program this year, please contact Barbara Scholl at bscholl@capousd.org or 949-643-1540. Your families request will be strictly confidential. Thank you for your support to the Adopt-A-Family program for our Bergeson families this holiday season. Garcia to serve as mayor, Tsunoda mayor pro tem

When the City Council reconvenes on Jan. 7, Council Member Donald Garcia will serve residents as mayor and Council Member Phillip Tsunoda will serve as mayor pro tem.
The council members were selected for the posts by their colleagues during the City Council’s annual reorganization Wednesday. The mayor and mayor pro tem serve a one-year term.
The reorganization followed the official swearing in of Garcia, Council Member Greg Ficke and Mayor Bill Phillips, who has served in the post this past year. The three incumbents were appointed in August after running unopposed for the four-year terms.
This will be the first mayoral stint for Garcia, who has served on the council since being appointed by the City Council in March 2007. He has spent this past year serving as mayor pro tem. Tsunoda has served the residents of Aliso Viejo since his council appointment in May 2007. Tsunoda would assume the duties of the mayor in his absence.
During Wednesday’s meeting, Phillips – who was recognized by Garcia, his colleagues and City Manager Mark Pulone – praised the community and residents for their endless volunteerism and spirit. He also acknowledged city staffers for their hard work and efforts.
The council meets the first and third Wednesday of the month in Council Chambers at City Hall, 12 Journey. The Dec. 17 meeting was canceled due to the holidays.
Council agendas are posted on the city’s Web site at www.cityofalisoviejo.com.

OI – Two Spot Octopus Gives Birth to Over 300 Young

Ocean Institute’s Two-Spot Octopus Gives Birth to More Than 300 Young

December 3, 2008, DANA POINT, Calif. – Ocean Institute aquarist Julianne Steers reports that the Institute’s Two-Spot Octopus (Octopus bimaculatus) eggs, cared for by their mother for the last two months, hatched Monday. More than 300 hatchlings about 4 mm in length are drifting about their tank as plankton, with some eating brine shrimp. The hatchlings can grow up to three feet in length and live about two years.
“It’s very exciting,” commented Steers, the Ocean Institute’s aquarist for five years. “We’re always glad to see that our marine life adapts well enough to life in our aquaria to reproduce.”
The Two-Spot Octopus lives off the coast of California, and can be identified by its circular blue eyespots on each side of the head. Steers caught the Institute’s Two-Spot Octopus last year off the coast of Laguna Beach; it is used regularly in the Institute’s ocean education programs for students. Steers has a scientific collecting permit issued by the State of California allowing her to legally collect the specimens. Because of their friendly temperament and hardiness, the Two-Spot Octopus makes an excellent aquarium specimen, Steers added.
The female Two-Spot Octopus lays her eggs near the end of her two-year life span. Steers was uncertain if the eggs were fertile, as the octopus had not been around a male since its capture. A female octopus has the capacity to store male sperm for long periods of time, however, and the Institute staff was delighted to see that the eggs had hatched on Monday.
The Ocean Institute has a 16,000-gallon system of small aquaria that contains 160 species and 1,200 specimens of local marine life. The public may enjoy them on weekends, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Cost: $6.50 adults, $4.50 children (ages 4-12), Ocean Institute members free. Institute address: 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr., Dana Point. Website: www.ocean-institute.org. Phone: (949) 496-2274.
Julianne Steers has an aquarist blog on the Ocean Institute website. Please visit: http://ocean-institute.netcommunity1.com/NETCOMMUNITY/Page.aspx?pid=337&srcid=337 or on the Ocean Institute website, www.ocean-institute.org, click on the Husbandry section of the Visitors page to access the blog.

Founded in 1977, the Ocean Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to ocean preservation through education, setting the standard for educational excellence and serving as a leading resource for universities, museums, teachers and all others seeking to increase their knowledge of the ocean. Unique maritime and ocean-themed items are available in the Chambers Gallery everyday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.

2008 Business of the Year – The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce has selected the Ocean Institute as Dana Point’s “Business of the Year.” The award recognizes the positive contribution the Ocean Institute has made to the Dana Point community.

AV Aquatic Center – Close to Opening

City’s Aquatic, Conference Centers one step closer to opening

The Aliso Viejo Aquatic Center and Conference Center are one step closer to opening, after the City Council on Wednesday approved the facilities’ draft operating budgets. Council members also signed off on the completed construction of the centers and Vista Park. The facilities will be owned by the city and operated by ClubCorp.

The centers will provide the public with a resort-style swimming complex and an impressive meeting space designed for weddings, birthdays, corporate meetings, parties and more.

The Aquatic Center, at 29 Santa Barbara, will operate during peak season from Memorial Day through Labor Day – which the City Council decided would be the most cost-effective operation for the city. However, the city will monitor its operating budget each year and make any schedule adjustments as needed. The facility, which will offer fee-based swimming programs and much more, is slated to make its public splash this Memorial Day weekend.

The city will soon begin accepting bookings for the Conference Center at 31 Santa Barbara. For information on booking the facility, call 949-598-9200 and ask for the private events director.

CUSD Schools Make Calif Honor Roll

CUSD SCHOOLS MAKE CALIFORNIA HONOR ROLL

After reviewing student achievement data for every public school in California, the following schools stood above the rest in getting students to grade level proficiency, earning the distinction of a California Honor Roll School for 2008:

Aliso Niguel High, Arroyo Vista Elementary, Bathgate Elementary, Chaparral Elementary, George White Elementary, Ladera Ranch Elementary, Laguna Niguel Elementary, Las Flores Middle, John Malcolm Elementary, Moulton Elementary, Tesoro High, Tijeras Creek Elementary, and Vista del Mar Elementary.

Honor Roll schools, sponsored by California Business for Education Excellence and Just for the Kids organizations, will be highlighted across the state, sharing success stories and best practices to provide hope and direction for public schools to reach grade level proficiency in reading and math. “These are the schools that hold the keys to raising student achievement and closing achievement gaps,” notes Greg Jones, Chairman of the California Business for Education Excellence Foundation.

At CUSD Honor Roll schools, high achievement is a standard across all ethnic and socioeconomic groups, and all subject areas. “The tremendous accomplishments of these schools continue to make CUSD the number one large school district in the state of California,” notes Superintendent A. Woodrow Carter. “We look forward to continuing to focus on our primary mission; to maintain and advance student learning at every school. I am proud of the success of our hard-working staff and students.”

“Follow the Star” Draws Record Numbers

Record Numbers See 11th Annual Living Nativity at LDS Church

“Follow the Star, a Living Nativity”, attracted over 4,700 people from the surrounding communities in Rancho Santa Margarita. That is about 2,000 more people than the best attendance in the last 11 years. At one point on Sunday night, the streets were so crowded the hosts were afraid the police might show up and ask for a permit. Bonnie Andre, wife of the producer, said, ”I had to walk from two blocks away with our next door neighbor for the 7:30 show on Sunday.”

Shows occurred on the half hour and while waiting for the next show guests were invited to see the Crèche exhibit which included over 500 international nativities. From the traditional to the bizarre, you saw everything. A beautiful French nativity, that took up an entire wall that included over 30 townspeople coming to visit the baby Jesus. A five foot puppet nativity set and even a nativity made from kitchen appliances.

To keep young hands from touching the delicate displays, LDS hosts, handed each child a “Seek and Find” game with pictures of eight select nativity characters they were to find in the large room. Once families were done in the Crèche exhibit they headed down the hall lined with paintings depicting Christ’s life. Then they opened the doors and were welcomed back in time to experience the “Living Nativity”.

As the show starts I listen to four girls from different denominations perform “Mary, May I Hold Your Little Baby.” Then the magic begins with the simple story of Mary and Joseph making the long journey by donkey to pay their taxes. The lights direct you to the field with the heavenly angel telling the shepherds of Christ’s birth. Then you see Joseph turned away at the Inn. He leads Mary to the stable only to be greeted by three regal kings. The scene ends with the light on the beautiful baby in Mary’s arms. The cries of the real baby in Mary’s arms extend over excerpts of the Hallelujah Chorus.

The lights and sound are supervised by volunteers Ken Brown, an architect from Portola Hills, and Eric Hanson, a professional lighting designer from Rancho Santa Margarita. The temporary sound booth is created under a tent in the middle of the parking lot at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Rancho Santa Margarita behind Altisima Park. Creating the perfect lighting and sound outside is quite a feat with an outside performance. Ken Brown said, “This is the first year I remember having pleasant beach weather for the performance. On Friday and Saturday night you didn’t even need a coat.” In the cast room, they were prepared for cold weather with hot chocolate to keep the cast warm in between shows. This year it just wasn’t needed but that didn’t stop the children and young shepherds, in the cast, from piling on the marshmallows. No one seemed to mind.
