Grants Awarded

ORANGE COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES

GRANTS FROM AFRICAN AMERICAN ALLIANCE FUND

TOTALING $163,500

Grants were awarded to organizations serving Black communities in Orange County

Total granting reached more than $500,000 since the Fund’s inception in 2020

Communities throughout Orange County, Calif. and surrounding regions have benefited from grants awarded through the African American Alliance Fund (AAAF) at the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF). In celebration of Juneteenth 2023 and the Fund’s third anniversary, OCCF is announcing a new round of grants totaling $163,500 to 20 organizations, which brings the total amount granted since inception to more than $550,000 to 43 organizations.

Founded on June 19, 2020, by OCCF’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Tammy Tumbling, the mission of the African American Alliance Fund is to raise awareness about systemic racism and support programs that advance African American communities throughout the southern California region. The Alliance Fund reflects OCCF’s lasting commitment to investing in the promise and potential of diverse communities in Orange County and beyond.

“We are so excited to be one of the recipients of the African American Alliance Fund (AAAF). We have served over 35,000 students, including students in Orange County and surrounding areas with our STEAM and Black College Expo programs,” said Dr. Theresa Price, Founder of the National College Resources Foundation. “This funding will help us spark continued learning to increase diversity in STEAM fields.”

Each year, OCCF assembles a committee to review select proposals for funding based on the priority areas of education, health, human services, economic opportunity, and civic engagement. 2023 grantees include: 100 Black Men of Los Angeles, 100 Black Men of Orange County, Arts and Learning Conservatory, Boss Programs, Bridge Builders Foundation, CarePortal, Cayenne Wellness Center and Children’s Foundation, Council of African American Parents (CAAP), CSUDH Dymally Institute, Forgiving For Living, Inc., Forgotten Children, Inc., Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, Legacy Ladies, Inc., National College Resources Foundation, Need 4 Bridges, Nehemiah Project LA, Parenting for Liberation, Pearls of Excellence Foundation The Right Kind of Black Girl, and Thomas House Family Shelter.

“The African American Alliance Fund is an opportunity to build bridges—to give people a place to join hands and address racial inequities,” said Tumbling. “We are proud to continue supporting communities and organizations with resources and opportunities toward their long-term success.”

Last year, OCCF granted $120,000 to 15 organizations on the AAAF’s second anniversary. AAAF grantees have educated and supported Orange County’s Black communities – connecting them with vital resources for their benefit. The 2023 grantees include organizations that reapplied for funding and new organizations that have met specific eligibility criteria. Grantees have exemplified the AAAF mission by investing in the success of underrepresented and diverse communities.

In addition to granting, the AAAF holds community gatherings that connect OC and LA-based organizations focused on racial equity and education. The AAAF hopes to serve as a convener in the county, building on the relationships with grantees to create a coalition of Black-led and Black-serving organizations.

The Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) combines giving strategy, community intelligence, enduring relationships, and heartfelt intention to amplify the power of giving and its profound result: greater good in Orange County, and beyond.

We serve as a resource for individual and family philanthropists, facilitate grant and scholarship programs, and lead community-based initiatives.

We inspire giving and connect people and resources to create sustainable impact, granting $975 million since 1989 in Orange County, across the country, and around the world.

Cox Communications and the Office of Councilmember Agran offer

a Free Tech Master Class for Adults Age 50 and Older

The One-Day Tech Master Class will provide older adults with an opportunity to advance their technology skillsets in a welcoming environment.

Cox Communications and the Office of Councilmember Larry Agran announce a free, one-day Tech Master Class for adults over the age of 50. This one-of-a-kind event was created as part of a larger effort to help bridge the “digital divide” among seniors. Located at the Lakeview Senior Center, this Tech Master Class will provide older adults who live in Irvine an opportunity to advance their technology skillsets, build competency, and remain connected. Participants can choose from one of two sessions, each in a low-stress, welcoming, and friendly learning environment.

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, seniors had to use and integrate technology in a way they hadn’t necessarily done before. To stay engaged and connected to the world, they were forced to learn and adapt quickly to a new way of communicating. With the necessary need to sharpen their tech skills, the digital divide among seniors was more apparent than ever.

“Cox is committed to continuously investing in our infrastructure and helping bridge the digital divide for people of all ages,” said Colleen Dillaway Market Vice President for Cox Communications in Orange County. “This Tech Master Class is just one example of how we’re meeting our consumers’ evolving needs. Attendees will walk away with practical information like how to make sure their WiFi is maximized in the home, and how to reboot their cable box. We’re proud to partner with the Office of Councilmember Larry Agran to create the Tech Master Class for Irvine seniors and equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to be fully immersive in our modern world.”

“I’m proud to be part of this initiative to help older adults to stay connected and improve their quality of life. A big thank you to Cox for their partnership and support,” said Councilmember Agran.

Affordable and accessible opportunities for seniors

When developing the Tech Master Class, it was important to both Cox Communications and the Office of Councilmember Larry Agran to create a space that was inviting and offered older adults a free and accessible means of advancing their technology skillsets. The Free Master Class will offer the following to Irvine’s older adults:

City of MV GeoTour

Mission Viejo launches first SoCal GeoTour – ‘Discover Mission Viejo’

The city of Mission Viejo and community volunteers on Saturday, June 10 will host a geocaching kick-off event to launch the first Southern California GeoTour. The kick-off event will take place during a portion of the City’s Farmers Market located at the North Paseo, 25282 Marguerite Parkway from 9:30-11 am.

Come learn how to geocache and be the first group to discover up to 27 new geocaches throughout Mission Viejo. If you find at least 24 of the GeoTour caches and collect their code words, you may submit your completed geocache passport to receive a souvenir trackable GeoCoin while supplies last. The GeoTour will be available after the kick-off event for anyone who is unable to attend.

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is a 21st century treasure hunting game played all over the world. The goal is to find physical containers – called geocaches – using the free geocaching app. When you find a geocache, you sign your name on the logbook and write about your experience online.  Geocaches come in all shapes and sizes. They can range from nanos (smaller than a dime) to ammo cans and 5-gallon buckets. The larger the container, the more swag and trinkets you’ll find!

Rules & Guidelines:

Always place the geocache in the exact spot you found it. Never remove or hide the geocache in a different location. If you take a trinket from the geocache, you must leave something of equal or greater value behind. Do not keep any trackable item that says “Trackable at Geocaching.com.” Instead, move trackables from cache to cache.

For more information on geocaching, this GeoTour or recommended geocaches in the City, visit the City’s website.

2 PIANOS 4 HANDS – LAGUNA PLAYHOUSE

LAGUNA PLAYHOUSE presents

the First Show of its 2023-2024 Season…

2 PIANOS 4 HANDS

Written by Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt

Directed by Tom Frey

THE IVORY TICKLING BEGINS WEDNESDAY, JULY 5

AT THE LAGUNA PLAYHOUSE IN LAGUNA BEACH!

“A masterful blend of comedy, storytelling, and outstanding piano talent! Not to be missed!”  – StageandCinema.com

LAGUNA PLAYHOUSE is thrilled to present the first show of its 2023-2024 season, the hilarious international musical sensation, 2 PIANOS 4 HANDS, written by Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt and directed by Tom Frey. 2 PIANOS 4 HANDS begins previews on Wednesday, July 5; will open on Sunday, July 9 at 5:30pm (press opening); and perform through Sunday, July 23 at the Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Dr. in Laguna Beach.

Get ready for an interlude of laughter and music as 2 men, or “4 hands,” take us on a journey about their would-be careers as concert pianists. The talented duo trade stories about piano lessons, pushy parents and eccentric teachers while playing everything from Bach to Billy Joel. Both hilarious and touching, the musical comedy captures the humor that comes with the path to becoming a pianist, as well as the sense of loss attached with eventually learning to let go of your wildest dreams. “A rare jewel of real entertainment, 2 PIANOS 4 HANDS not only hits all the right notes, but tickles the ivories and your funny bone too!” (The Daily Mail)

TOM FREY (Director) is the new artistic director of the Peterborough Players in Peterborough, New Hampshire, as well as the U.S. resident director of 2 Pianos 4 Hands. He has directed over 20 productions of 2P4H at theatres around the country, including: Portland Stage, The Cape Playhouse, Stages Repertory Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Pittsburgh City Theatre, the Rubicon, and many others. In addition to directing the show, he has performed the show over 600 times in the United States and Canada. He has played both roles, but spent most of his time playing the role of “Ted.”

TED DYKSTRA (Co-Creator/Original Co-Director) started playing piano at age six, and peaked at age twelve, when he had a particularly memorable string of firsts competing in the Edmonton Kiwanis Music Festival. His acting career began at a young age in St Albert, Alberta, playing the 2nd Bird in Once Upon a Clothesline, but his breakout role was Bilbo Baggins in his school’s grade eight production of The Hobbit.  Since then, he has gone on to play leading roles on every major stage in Canada.

RICHARD GREENBLATT (Co-Creator/Original Co-Director) is an actor, director, writer, and musician who has been a professional theatre artist for the last 49 years. He was born in Montréal and studied piano for 10 years with the late Professor Dorothy Morton of the McGill Conservatory of Music. He studied theatre at Dawson College before pursuing his acting training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, England. Upon graduating, he worked at Leeds Playhouse for a season, returning to Canada in 1975. Since then, he has performed in theatres in Toronto, across Canada, and abroad.

Growing up on an organic poultry farm, Jefferson realized he had dexterous fingers as the fastest chicken gutter in Upstate New York. He soon realized his fingers could move just as fast playing Mozart and at age eleven he started pursuing music aggressively.
