Grammy Winning Vocalist Performs at Soka

Multi-Grammy Award winning vocalist/pianist Diane Schuur fashions new versions of songs for which she has a deep-rooted affection.  “Running On Faith,” released by Jazzheads Music Group is co-produced by Schuur and Grammy winning saxophonist Ernie Watts.  This project features music by some of her heroes; from Miles Davis to Carole King to Paul Simon to Percy Mayfield. “I’ve been focusing on the condition of our world, about what is, about what can be,” comments Schuur.

In contrast to prior recordings, Schuur performs on piano throughout, exhibiting her skills as an instrumentalist.  Schuur tells a personal story with her first new recording in six years, demonstrating her deep knowledge of the blues and strength as a pianist.

Schuur is set to appear with her quartet at the Soka Performing Arts Center for a 3:00pm matinee on Sunday, February 26, 2023.  The venue address is 1 University Drive, Aliso Viejo, CA 92656. For Tickets:

Blind since birth, Diane Schuur was nicknamed “Deedles” by her mother.  The Tacoma-born artist grew up steeped in jazz, courtesy of her parents’ record collection.  She was officially discovered by jazz legend Stan Getz at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1979.  Honors include two Best Jazz Vocal Performance Grammy Awards for “Timeless and “Diane Schuur and The Count Basie Orchestra,” both released by GRP Records, the label that launched her recording career. “Running on Faith” is the follow-up to her well-received “I Remember You: With Love To Stan and Frank,” her debut on Jazzheads (#JH1209) in 2014.  Schuur’s deep catalog also includes projects for Atlantic, Concord and Vanguard.

Joining Ms. Schuur on stage will be two-time Grammy winning saxophonist Watts.  At 16, Watts was a featured soloist with the Delaware Symphony. He won a Downbeat Scholarship to the Berklee School of Music in Boston and soon after was performing with Buddy Rich’s Big Band. After relocating to Los Angeles, Watts became a first-call soloist for countless studio sessions and was a 20-year staple in Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show band.  He went on to perform with Quincy Jones, Lalo Schifrin, Henry Mancini, Oliver Nelson and Dave Grusin.  The saxophonist was also a founding member of Charlie Haden’s Quartet West.

Schuur’s voice is bold and expressive, simultaneously romantic and mischievous, radiating soulful warmth. It all started very early in her life when she made her stage debut at ten years of age.  Her success has led to collaborations with artists and producers such as B.B. King, Ray Charles, Dave Grusin, Stevie Wonder, Phil Ramone, and Maynard Ferguson.  For “Running On Faith,” Schuur takes the reins, crafting a most personal statement.

City Of MV Updates

City Council members on Tuesday began pre-budget discussions; recognized an outstanding Mission Viejo Nadadores diver; and received information about plans for the Oso Creek Water Treatment Plant and Mission Hospital.

The meeting kicked off the pre-budget discussion for fiscal years 2023-2025. The City adopted a balanced budget for FY 22/23 and ended the fiscal year last June with a $5 million operating surplus. Council Members shared their views about projects they want included as part of the process, which will entail subsequent meetings for the public to provide input.

In the presentation portion of the meeting, Council Members recognized Nadadores diver Anna Lemkin for her recent gold medal win at the FINA Junior World Championships as well as the results of the successful Konrad Reuland Charity Tennis/Pickleball Tournament and its benefits to our community.

In another presentation, Assistant City Manager Keith Rattay spoke about plans for the Santa Margarita Water District’s Oso Creek Water Treatment Plant and City Administrative/Storage Building. The former water treatment plant was one of the original plants in Orange County, and the new plant will treat a higher capacity of water more efficiently with a smaller footprint.

In other water district news, Santa Margarita Water District Director of External Relations Jim Leach gave an update about the recycled water main break at Marguerite and Mustang Run. As the City diligently reported, all lanes in both directions are now open and traffic was restored to normal operations.

Council Members also received an update from Providence Mission Hospital Chief Executive Seth Teigen about the hospital’s plans to expand.

The City Council normally meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. Residents are encouraged to attend City Council meetings, which are streamed live on the City’s website and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99.  Stay tuned to the City’s social media sites for up-to-date news and information.

Are you signed up for AlertOC?

With the magnitude 4.2 earthquake that struck near Malibu this week and high winds sparking wildfire warnings throughout the region, the City of Mission Viejo is reminding residents to sign up for AlertOC, a mass notification system designed to keep the public informed of earthquakes, wildfires and other local emergencies.

Mission Viejo – in 2008 – was one of the first cities to implement AlertOC– a county-wide notification system funded by the County. The system gives us the ability to communicate with residents and businesses about emergencies that may require immediate lifesaving actions.

Through AlertOC, time-sensitive voice messages from the County or City may be sent to your home, cell or business phone. Text messages may also be sent to cell phones, e-mail accounts and hearing-impaired receiving devices. You can register the whole family to ensure everyone stays safe.

To register, click this link or text AlertOC to 888777.

Teen Loft and WellSpace

Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach Addresses Mental Health in Teenagers

What the world needs now is more opportunities for teens to learn how to pause, take a breath, make positive choices, self-regulate, and live in healthy relationships surrounded by caring adults and enriching experiences. As an organization, Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach’s reason for being is to provide kids with a safe place to build resilience and thrive.

Even before the pandemic, Laguna Beach Unified School District had one of the highest rates of underage drug and alcohol use, depression, and anxiety in Orange County. On top of that, teens in general are experiencing an epidemic of loneliness. The Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach’s commitment to providing kids with the healthy physical and mental tools for success are especially impactful during the middle school years because their brains development is going through a growth spurt much like a 2-year-old.

Teens are making decisions that can have lifelong ramifications. For instance, those who drink alcohol in middle school are exponentially more likely to have addiction problems as an adult. This is only part of the reason the OCDE (Orange County Department of Education) and CHOC (Childrens Hospital of Orange County) have been partnering with Design with Purpose, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, to create WellSpaces throughout Orange County.

With generous support from the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach community and Deana Duffek of Design with Purpose, the Loft and WellSpace has been transformed into an inviting and healing oasis where our teenaged members can connect to support, resources, and information on a variety of physical and mental health topics that promotes whole-person wellness. Currently this space serves 20 to 30 teens daily with the capacity and expectations for growth.

As the saying goes, “we suffer in isolation and heal in community.” Here, we are building resilience through community.
