Council to recognize firefighters for quick response to June 5 blaze

The City Council on July 1 will recognize officials from the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) for their quick response and efforts in extinguishing a fire on June 5.

The fire, which damaged about three acres in a brushy area near Moulton Parkway and Laguna Hills Drive, sparked during the Aliso Viejo Community Cup at the Aliso Viejo Country Club, just up the street from the scene.

Several city officials, business owners and others who participated in the annual fundraising golf tournament watched as OCFA helicopters scooped up water from the golf course to help fight the fire that started around 3:30 p.m.

Council Member Carmen Cave, who sits on OCFA’s board of directors, complimented the fire authority’s brisk work and response to put out the fire and keep the community safe.

“The response of the OCFA to our wildland fire made this year’s golf tournament unforgettable,” Cave said. “There is a certain comfort and pride when you see smoke, hear sirens from responding units then witness the two OCFA helicopters arrive, assess the situation, land on the golf course to stage then scoop water from the Golf Course lake, and put the fire out in short order.”

Firefighters had the fire, which was pushed by winds, under control at 4:30 p.m.

Fire officials said they appreciate the country club’s assistance in the work that was a real “team effort.” The fire authority was assisted by law enforcement, Aliso Woods Wilderness Park and parents and teachers from nearby Kindercare.

Representatives from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and Kindercare are also expected to be recognized July 1.

The council meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Wednesday of the month in Council Chambers at City Hall, 12 Journey. For more information, visit the city’s Web site at www.cityofalisoviejo.com.
