Deep Diving Submersible, Catamaran Mothership Open for Tours Before Presentation by Chief Pilot Chris Welsh on Sept. 30

The Ocean Institute is pleased to welcome Chris Welsh, chief pilot for Deep Sub LLC, who will offer tours of his deep diving submersible and catamaran mothership on Wednesday, Sept. 30, beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a presentation on his work. 

 

Deep Sub LLC operates a deep diving submersible and mothership capable of going to depths of 36,000 feet; following the ship and sub tours, Welsh will talk about the sub’s design, dive locations, planned exploration and scientific goals.  The objective of his company is to accomplish “Five Dives” to the deepest places in each of the five ocean basins.

The following is the schedule for Wednesday, Sept. 30:

5:30 pm-6:00 pm: submersible viewing and Q& A

6:00 pm-6:30pm: catamaran tour

6:30 pm-7:00 pm: doors open and refreshments

7:00 pm:  presentation

Tour the catamaran only on Sunday, Sept. 27 – Visitors can tour the catamaran on Sunday, Sept. 27.  Tours are offered from 1 – 2:30 p.m.   The cost to tour is included in the regular weekend price of admission: $10/adult; $7.50/senior & child; kids under 2 are free.

The Ocean Institute is a non-profit organization which seeks to demystify the world of science, empower children to become tomorrow’s scientific leaders, and deepen society’s appreciation of how the ocean and science impact our lives.  Established in 1977, the Ocean Institute uses the mystery and allure of the ocean to inspire 115,000 students per year with more than 60 award-winning ocean science and maritime history programs. 

We’re located in Dana Point Harbor alongside the tide pools of a Marine Protected Area, and we use the ocean as the classroom to inspire students of all ages to learn.  We’re open to the general public.  Weekdays, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., $5/person (members and children under 2 free).  Facilities open: the atrium, alcove, courtyard & Maddie James Seaside Learning Center.

Weekends, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., $10/adult, $7.50 seniors and children ages 3-12 (members and children under 2 free).  Facilities open: the atrium, alcove, courtyard, Maddie James Seaside Learning Center & Ocean Education Center; includes Pilgrim tour on most Sundays, 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.  Unique maritime and ocean-themed items are available in the Chambers Gallery daily, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Institute address: 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr., Dana Point.  Website: www.ocean-institute.org.  Phone: (949) 496-2274.
